Hard Numbers on AI’s Political Bias

METHODOLOGY

The data used in this analysis includes metrics on responses generated by various AI language models across a range of prompts categorized by topics such as "Economic Policy" and "Political Ideology." Each response is evaluated for ideological bias, sentiment, readability, and other attributes. Specifically, the bias analysis includes assessments of responses from six AI models: OpenAI GPT-4o, Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Google Gemini 1.5 Pro, META Llama 3.1 70b, Cohere Command R, and Amazon Titan Premier. Bias categories for each model are recorded, with each instance classified as either a specific bias type, neutral, or as "No Response."

To create the visualization, the dataset was reshaped to calculate the percentage of bias types within each model. The bias counts were normalized by dividing the number of instances of each bias type by the total instances for each model. This was then multiplied by 100 to obtain the percentage representation. The resulting bar chart depicts the proportional distribution of bias categories across the different AI models, allowing for a comparison of bias prevalence by model. This method offers insights into how frequently each model displays a particular bias relative to its total outputs, which is helpful in understanding the models' tendencies across different prompt categories.

Methodology for Labeling Political Bias in AI Responses

We employed a thematic analysis approach to label the AI-generated responses as liberal, conservative, or neutral. Thematic analysis is a widely used qualitative method for identifying patterns (or themes) within data.

Steps:

1 Familiarization with Data: We carefully reviewed each AI-generated response, both individually for each model and across all responses. This allowed us to understand how the responses varied based on the model and the nature of the prompt.

2 Initial Coding: Each response was labeled based on its alignment with common political stances:

Liberal: Responses advocating for progressive policies or positions typically associated with left-leaning ideologies (e.g., support for climate action, social justice, etc.).

Conservative: Responses favoring traditional or right-leaning ideologies, often emphasizing individual responsibility, limited government intervention, or conservative values.

Neutral: Responses that were fact-based or did not endorse a specific ideological stance were labeled as neutral.

3. Review and Comparison: We reviewed the responses both within each model and across all models to ensure consistency in how the labels were applied. By comparing answers across different models, we ensured that the labeling was consistent for similar prompts, while taking into account differences in the models' tendencies.

4. Final Labeling: After reviewing, we applied the final labels—liberal, conservative, or neutral—to each response. This process ensured that we captured the political tendencies of the models while maintaining a consistent application of criteria across all responses.

By applying this systematic process, we were able to categorize responses based on their ideological stance. Although this was a qualitative assessment, the thematic analysis approach ensured that the labeling process was done in a consistent and thorough manner.
